SHINYANGA WATER AND SANITATION AUTHORITY (SHUWASA) SIGNS CONTRACT TO STRENGTHEN INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY WORTH 9 BILLION SHILLINGS

Shinyanga Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (SHUWASA) has signed a contract to strengthen its Institutional capacity with a value of 9 billion Tanzanian Shillings. The contract was signed between SHUWASA and the Consultancy firm, Gopa Infra from Germany, in collaboration with Superlit Consulting Ltd from Tanzania.

The agreement was signed today, November 4, 2024, at the SHUWASA headquarters in Shinyanga Municipality.

Speaking shortly after the contract signing, SHUWASA's Executive Director, Eng. Yusuph Katopola, stated that the contract is for a four-years period and is a part of a major water and sanitation project in Shinyanga funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), in partnership with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, with a value of 76 million Euros.

"This consultant will help implement a part of the AFD project, which involves building the institution’s capacity. First, they will assess the areas that require capacity building, including staff and other aspects to improve the delivery of clean water and sanitation services," said Engineer Katopola.

He added that the consultant will also assist the Authority in managing other components of the water and sanitation project in Shinyanga.

On his part, the Resident Director of Gopa Infra, Stefan Doerner, expressed his pleasure at the opportunity to work in Tanzania and promised to assist in building SHUWASA’s capacity to ensure the delivery of quality water and sanitation services.

It should be recalled that on June 6, 2022, the Government of Tanzania and the French Development Agency (AFD) signed an agreement for a concessional loan of 76 million Euros (approximately 200 billion Tanzanian Shillings) to fund the major water and sanitation project in Shinyanga. The project involves institutional capacity building, construction of a 287-kilometer clean water network, rehabilitation of 100 kilometers of the existing old network, and the construction of two large water tanks (Kolandoto - 1,500,000 liters and Didia - 250,000 liters).

Additionally, the project includes the construction of four sludge treatment plants in Shinyanga Municipality (Mwagala and Ihapa) and two in Shinyanga District Council (Kituli and Iselamagazi). It also involves significant rehabilitation of the Ning'hwa water treatment plant and an assessment of the performance of the Ning’hwa Dam.
